Robert KubicaPolish rookie Robert Kubica has dismissed suggestions that he is among F1’s “new generation”.

The 22-year-old, who replaced Jacques Villeneuve in the BMW-Sauber race seat mid-way through last season, scoffed at claims that some of his young rivals are also shaping up as the future of the sport.

“These terms are used mainly by the media,” Kubica told the EUROSPORT MotorMagazin.

He added: “There have always been young drivers with potential who enter formula one.”

Kubica insisted that grouping promising drivers together as representing a “new generation” is oversimplifying the truth.

“For example, Kovalainen and Vettel are not of the same generation.”

Kubica continued: “Each of us has a different car, a different team. I find these comparisons are not useful.”

He played down his meteoric rise in 2006, including a maiden podium and labels as a champion of the future, despite having only six grands prix under his belt.

“I don’t think about it,” Kubica insisted, “I just try to give my best.

“I simply consider myself lucky to be with BMW and I don’t waste too much time having thoughts about the future.”
